The Effects of Amine Type and Lean Amine Temperature on Gas Sweetening Processes

A Case Study and Simulation

Abstract

In the North Gas Company (NGC) in Kirkuk, Iraq, sour gas stream is loaded with considerable amounts of H2S and CO2 of 2.95% and 2.54%, respectively. A DEA amine system is currently used to reduce these sour component concentrations below 5 ppm and 2% for H2S and CO2, respectively. This study used Bryan Research and Engineering’s ProMax® process simulation software to optimize this amine sweetening system by adopting other amine types and blends, such as methyldiethanolamine (MDEA). It could be argued that a 50 wt% MDEA solution circulated at 414 m3/h was determined to be the optimum operating conditions. This design met sweet gas specifications and minimized the reboiler duty to 38 MW, 30.9% reduction in steam consumption. The experimental simulation work is also examined the effects of lean solvent temperature on the gas sweetening process efficiency and performance and find out that the lean amine temperature within the range of 43–48°C in all sceneries give acceptable sweetening results.

Ribwar K. Abdulrahman has an M.Sc. degree in Natural gas processing Engineering, United Kingdom. His Academic teaching experience extends more than10 years as a lecturer and an assistant teaching in Petroleum & Chemical Engineering Departments, Faculty of Engineering, Koya University.  He has an extensive experience in research within the area of Natural gas processing technologies and Engineering and related fields. Mr. Abdulrahman is a member in several local & international engineering and scientific societies: IEU-F.R. Iraq, KEU-Kurdistan region F.R. Iraq, SPE-USA, IChemE- The UK, AIChE,- USA. He published more than 37th international research papers,  international conference papers and  scientific books, almost in Natural gas engineering.

Mohammed H. S. Zangana, Department of Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Koya University, Daniel Mitterrand Boulevard, Koya KOY45 AB64, Kurdistan Region – F.R. Iraq

Mohammed H. S. Zangana is currently dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Koya University and the former head of chemical engineering department and a member of petroleum engineering department teaching staff since 2004. Dr.Zangana has PhD from Nottingham Universit on Multiphase Flow for oil and gas production, in addition to the Kurdistan Regional Government and Koya University his PhD research project was part from TMF funded by a number of world's well-known oil and gas companies such as; BP Exploration; Chevron; ExxonMobil; Petrobras; PETRONAS; Shell; Statoil and TOTAL. During his Msc study at Baghdad University the Natural Gas processing was the focus of Dr. Zangana's Research work. Dr Zangana is very active researcher especially in the fields of Multiphase Flow, Natural Gas processing, renewable energy and environment. He has 16 publications in well known journals and international conferences and he has been awarded a number of international grants for his research projects.
